History
The Harris Grill has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1927. Like other lesser known landmarks such as the US Steel Building, Forbes Field, and the Hot Metal Bridge, Harris Grill is a living Pittsburgh tradition. Historical Points of Interest Include:
- Leslie Donovan, clad in her Catholic schoolgirl uniform and knee socks, was the first underage person to be denied service in 1936.
- Jonas Salk created the polio vaccine using mold from beneath the mens' room urinals in 1952.
- Tomato ketchup was invented in the Harris Grill kitchen in 1957.
- In 1975, Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa was buried beneath the back patio.
- Van Halen's "Panama" was composed over a few Iron's at the Grill in 1984.
